Paris, Opening Night

Posted by on 07.07.2011

Last night was everything I thought it would be… and more.  We opened in Paris with a line of 16 women in white leotards and pony tails prepared to execute Balanchine’s Symphony in 3 Movements.  You could feel the excitement in the air; the night we had been waiting for had finally arrived.  After the curtain closed on Symphony in 3, the short intermission came to an end as the first notes of Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun began to drift into the air from the pit, followed by Balanchine’s energetic pas de deux, “Tarentella”. As a final treat for our first Paris audience, we closed the evening with Balanchine’s “Ballet Imperial.”

The scene behind the curtain after the show.

As always, despite nerves and anticipation, you could tell that everyone was having a wonderful time out on the stage. I have never been a part of such a long curtain call.  The applause went on and on.  It was such an amazing moment, I will never forget it.  When the curtain finally fell, a rush of emotion hit us all.  We had just done it!  We had just debuted in France; we are now an international company.  Everyone was embracing, crying tears of joy, and congratulating each other on a successful first Paris performance.  I felt so proud to be a part of this exceptional group of dancers.

This morning when we came into class, Edward shared his emotions with us, tearfully telling us how proud he was of us, saying “I love you guys”.  You could tell he was on cloud nine, and we are right up there with him.

We have jumped the first hurdle, but there is much more a head of us.  Here is to more successful performances! Congrats MCB; it is an honor to be a part of this.

  1. I’m a bit late, but I absolutely loved your stay in Paris. I had planned on seeing three representations, but ended up coming every other night or so. I even managed to bring back friends and family who are usually not ballet enthusiasts. You were all fantastic.

    • Thank you for your kind words! I am so glad you enjoyed your experience. We all miss Paris every day. You all made our experience so special!
